Decide who or what needs to hear from the UPS.
When remote monitoring, automated shutdown or alerting justifies an NMC, and when it is optional.
The Short Version
- Decide whether anyone or any system must receive status, alerts, or control the UPS remotely.
- If graceful shutdown of servers or network devices is required, an NMC (or equivalent) is usually needed.
- If the UPS is local and monitored only by nearby staff, a network card may be optional.
Who needs to hear from the UPS?
A network management card is justified when remote visibility, alerting, or automated shutdown is part of the operating plan. It is less necessary when the UPS is local and attended.
Match capability to need
Choose the monitoring and control level that matches how the site is operated. Higher capability adds cost and configuration; it should solve a real requirement.
